The Nikon_CT_Scanner is for users with samples that are not optically transparent or need the penetrating power of X-rays. It has been used on a wide variety of samples from fossils, bones, fixed tissue, engineering samples, and broken binoculars. Some biological samples require application of contrast enhancing agents, otherwise sample preparation is minimal.
